Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 7:18 PM EST Jan. 21, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect from Sunday evening through
Tuesday evening...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a high rip
current risk, which is in effect from Sunday evening through
Tuesday evening.

* Timing... Sunday evening through Tuesday evening.

* Impacts... strong and dangerous rip currents are forecast which
will be hazardous for those in the surf zone.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current remain calm.
Don't fight the current. Swim in a direction following the
shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave
for help. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip
current.

... Small Craft Advisory in effect from 7 PM Monday to 7 am EST
Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a Small Craft
Advisory... which is in effect from 7 PM Monday to 7 am EST
Tuesday. A gale watch has also been issued. This gale watch is in
effect from Sunday evening through Monday evening.

* Winds and seas... west winds 25 to 35 kt with gusts up to 40 kt,
mainly Sunday evening through Monday evening. Seas 7 to 10 feet
in the Atlantic waters with seas 10 to 16 feet in the Gulf,
mainly Sunday evening through Monday night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 20 to 33 knots
are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft.
Inexperienced mariners... especially those operating smaller
vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions.

A gale watch is issued when the risk of gale force winds of 34 to
47 knots has significantly increased... but the specific timing
and/or location is still uncertain. It is intended to provide
additional lead time for mariners who may wish to consider
altering their plans.
